That's where your wrong, there is actually an old Zelda game where Zelda is the protagonist. Didn't work out well...haha...anyways...why would Zelda need to be a protagonist when she's the one mentioned in the title for so many times...it is the LEGEND OF ZELDA not the LEGEND OF LINK.
The CD-i games right! They sucked incredibly!  Besides, Zelda technically is a leading protagonist of the series. Each game is actually indebted to her and she even fights back sometimes. She also pretty powerful in the games and her moves in Smash all seem incredibly accurate and plausible for her, unlike Peach (Peachs specials are accurate though) |

We know...but Zelda is more powerful than Peach. Do you remember how she can hold off a giant beast Ganon so that Link could deliver the final blow in Ocarina of Time. That was priceless. And Zelda has good archery skills...Link's just better though. |

TP; Not couting what she did when Ganon possesed her she only used light arrows.
I would actually believe that Peach would be the strong one considering she do sports.
(All that cake should make her fat)

Honestly, I can't decide.
Unless Sakurai mentions something along the lines of "Saving Princess Peach could reunite our hero (Mario) with his lost brother (Luigi)" or similarly "Saving Princess Zelda would be a great asset when facing the final piece of the Triforce (Ganondorf)" then I will withhold my vote.
BTW, if it's the latter, I'd have to go with Zelda.
