So! Now I want to get things figured out with Darągus. A lot of this is sketchy and undefined, so my goal is to make everything work!
I already have a lot written up in a more profile-type format on my computer, so some of it was reused here.
I think I have the basics here. It needs work!
Darągus Mortomedus
Early relevant history:
-The Exiled are banished from Azavon, Valmeera rises higher from the surface. -Alazar creates the magical Farraen race through the power and will of the High Magic. -The Farraen Kingdom is established, being a daughter-kingdom of sorts. The High Magic blesses their land, and it becomes fruitful and rich in magic, soon renown for its forests and beauty. -In Azavon, the common non-Farraen people become the tentative people of the lower-Azavonian kingdom. -The Farraens choose to swear themselves into the service Azavon, being appreciative of their creation and honorary position. The two nations live hand-in-hand. Farraen nobles, much like priests, systematically serve in the Valmeerian High Temple, giving offerings of Radiance (their blessed and predominate magic power). -The Farraens grow in number and develop a highly skilled military. -Darągus is born, grows in Farraen magic, and trains in the Farraen military. He learns fasts and becomes a great young warrior. He also serves in turn in the High Temple. -Darągus has thoughts of power, and from within the dark recesses of his mind he comes to desire the power of corrupted magic. Throughout the next several years, he continually keeps his eyes and ears open for anything that would aid him. Eventually he learns of the forbidden Radiance-opposite, the dark element of Shadow, and dabbles in it. His lust for power strengthens. -Due to his great skill, Darągus becomes High-Chief of the Farraen military forces. He somehow avoids serving in the Valmeerian temple and even visiting the land at all, due to him feeling a darkness within himself, and the spiritual and genetic holiness required on the island (the High Magic would not be able to tolerate his presence, and he'd be found out). -Darągus secretly goes on a more serious quest to unlock the mysteries of dark magic, and discovers the remains of a bit of land which was most defiled by the Exiled. From the depths of the judicial waves, his dark magic brings forth the grains of earth polluted by the same deep darkness. In it he discovers the seeds which brought about his person. He and the ancient spirit of defilement were one, in a sense. -Darągus practices and experiments with this power, and becomes remarkably skilled. His desire for power and dominance grows all the deeper still, and through deception and corrupted magic he comes to possess the Farraen city-fortress Ranadell (darkly bewitching the minds of those in charge until he is on top). Trading Radiance for Shadow, he becomes highly powered in dark Farraen magic, telekinesis, Shadow-casting (mental influencing), and puppeteering (an end to Shadow-casting). Black tattoo-like marks appear on his body as well, as some sort of supernatural symbolism. -At Ranadell, he uses his powers to darken the minds of his subjects, casting a great shadow as it were. Being Lord of Ranadell satisfies him for a comparatively short time, his mind set on even greater things. -Unexplainable tension rises between Ranadell and the rest of the Farraen kingdom, and the Farraen leaders become suspicious. Even so, Darągus maintains a sustainable relationship and evades inquiries. -As time goes on, Darągus schemes and decides to finally make a stand for his goals. Darągus conspires with outsiders, and enables them to create a dimensional rift far away across the continents (something serious enough to distract and occupy his greatest threat, Alazar). His lust for dominance and power, coupled with his underlying hatred for the Farraen kingdom and people causes him make a very bold move. -Darągus, now identified as a witch-lord, attempts to enslave the heavily fortified Farraen city and capital, Lohaerśs. The battle that transpires became known as the Day of the Dark Shadow. Darągus, in the hight of his power, ultimately corrupts and enslaves his inhabitants and surrounding neighbors (man, Farraen, and mythic beings), and takes them to wage war against Lohaerśs. He cast his dark shadow over the field and city, literally darkening the air, and in the midst of the battle works to corrupt his enemies and gain allies among them. Only those of the strongest wills are able to resists him, and Lohaerśs has to fight it's own people behind it's walls in addition to overcoming the invaders. -Four of Azavon's Seven Seers catch wind of the dire battle and fight in defense of the city, weakening Darągus' stranglehold, although not completely, and piercing his ranks deep with Aether-Radiance. -Alazar surprises Darągus by arriving at the scene (he cast a dimensional-spell over the rift, tentatively fixing it upon word of trouble), and drastically turns the tide of the event. Alazar summons vast amounts of energy and breaks the hold of Darągus' Shadow, and cuts down the utterly lost with his golden Aether sword. Darągus is thoroughly defeated, and a blow by Alazar's sword scars his flesh - a scar which later takes the form of another black tattoo. -For his evils and treachery, Alazar exiles Darągus, crippling his power and removing his title of Witch-Lord. His foot is never permitted to touch Farraen or Azavonian ground again. He is spared due to a prophecy given to Alazar, a prophecy untold to any others. -Darągus is left to wonder aimlessly in bitterness, and Lohaerśs is abandoned as a ruin.
In between past and present history:
-Darągus wonders to whereabouts unknown, forever brooding in bitterness, anger, and hate. He comes to completely loath Alazar, the Farraen people, and Azavon. -Darągus retains trace amounts of magic, his person becoming thoroughly entwined with the dark power. He strives to do what he can with it to plague the kingdoms that plague him. -Years pass, and Darągus proves to be only a minor nuisance, interfering with trade and travel. -Darągus keeps seeking power, and plots to regain his full strength, and even surpass it. He gains a deep desire to overthrow Alazar, overturn the kingdoms, and rule Valmeera by his own power. -Many more years pass, and Darągus reoccupies the ruins of Ranadell. The soils of corruption are stored there, and Darągus uses their energy to empower himself. Time passes and he conspires in secret, gaining servants. Much of what happens here is unrecorded. Darągus gains more evil-induced black tattoos, and grows in much strength. -Darągus learns of some cleansing feat Alazar is in the midst of performing in a neighboring area. Perceiving a connection through the magic to the corrupted sands and the Exiled people, and fueled by long-held hatred, Darągus uses the greatest power he has and attempts to destroy Alazar in the High Priest's weakened state. A war is waged for several days, with Darągus possessing mythic beasts with Shadow and assailing his enemy. At dawn some time into it, Alazar completes his task and crushes Darągus yet again, giving him another scar. In the final day of the whole ordeal, from previous sunrise to the light of the morning's dawn, the stars of the sky shown brightly, piercing even the radiance of the sun in mid-day. At the end, the land split into a holy Valmeerian symbol. -Darągus, having failed yet again and left as a pathetic defeated creature, returns to Ranadell and becomes mad with anger. He takes some time to recover from the blow. -Years pass and plotting continues. Throughout the following years minor rebellions are lead by him.
More recent:
-Darągus gains strength, and gets word of Azavonian and Farraen happenings. Suspicion arises and he looks into it. Uncertain about what's going on, he tampers anyway. Before long he discovers that plans for the ancient Exiled were in action, and restoration between the peoples were in store, as well as a perfection of the kingdoms, and a beautification and glory so great that Darągus became enraged. -Darągus meddles in the affairs and tries to decipher what was going on, and after a while he has a good idea what it all was. He attempts to keep one step ahead of Azavon and kill off the prophesied heirs and foil their great plans. -He conspires with other villainous characters, and uses his Shadow in secret to push his dark will into others. He's gone so far as to manipulate even the Drocons themselves to carry out his wishes, and he plays the part of advisor and "partner" to those most valuable to his cause. Darągus is strongly a loner, however, and much of these partnerships is painful for him to fake. -Story of 2100 begins.
-Somewhere around here I want to put Daragus entering into cahoots with Izzy the Red. -Earlier on in the later portion of the background, I need to put in something about Daragus trapping the Farraen magic smith twins in two lost oak trees, Riionn and Giionn. Riionn was sealed in the Red Oak by Daragus' power, and Giionn in the Yellow Oak. He did this in an effort to prevent a foretelling of his defeat from coming true.
