It has been revealed through some Japanese translations that not all characters from Melee are coming back. I completely agree with this, because there are some crappy characters (of which I will talk about in a second) who do not deserve any more attention than what they've been given.

So who do you think will get the Axe? What Melee characters have been permanently "DEFEATED"?

I'm thinking, first off, Pichu. This ones obvious. Pichu has no potential, and is no longer very popular. Any new "small electric pokemon" ideas should be fueled into making Pikachu better, because the weakest link of all the clones is most definitely Pichu. Other possible clone cuts might be Falco, Dr. Mario(pretty please), and Young Link(at least an altered look and move style for this one), and Roy.

The quetion comes up about Ness. *starts to cry* I love Ness, he has always been my personal favorite. Now while I would be happy to be Lucas, and forget about Ness, I have this nagging feeling he will make a return. Either as a costume for Lucas, but if what Sakurai said is true, about having no further alternate costumes, then he will return as a completely new character, with a moveset appropriate to him (Ness never used offensive psi in Earthbound).

I will repeat the question, what do you fine ladies and gentlemen think? Stand up for characters, or tear them apart. LETS HEAR IT!

No to Dr. Mario & Young Link - pointless wastes of diskspace.

I would guess Sheik won't return either, as Zelda moves on to Twilight Princess mode.

Hmm...Sheik's been confirmed by Coro Coro, Sheik's been given a new TP look and he/she is accessed via Zelda's Down Special: Twilight Change. The news could be found in General Discussion.

As for axed characters...I'll list the clones and say which I feel could be cut:
Pichu - it's inevitable.
Falco - not really, I could see them capitalizing on new movesets for him.
Ganondorf - seriously, he'll have a new moveset so he won't go.
Dr. Mario - maybe as an unlockable Mario costume?
Young Link - only if the change his moveset, use masks or use weapons like megaton hammer, windwaker and etc
Roy - I like him better than Marth but he'd most likely get the cut.

Mostly agreed.

Pichu - Yep.  He's a goner.
Falco - From where I'm standing, his odds aren't so good.  He's probably dead and buried.
Ganondorf - Worst case scenario, he comes back as a boss-only character/Ganon.  But he's definetly going to be in SE as a villian.
Dr. Mario - To paraphrase Heart of Darkness: "Doctah Mario — he dead."  I'm willing to bet he'll not be appearing as an alternate costume.
Young Link - Maybe Windwaker-ized, or masked.  I'm hoping for the latter, I'll take the former.  But his odds are looking more and more like a fool's dream.
Roy - Gone.  (Caution: rant ahead.)  And good riddance to the cheap, fire-sword-wielding schweinhund! (Rant ended.)  Others may disagree, but he's gone for better or worse.
As for:
Ness - He's got his stage back.  Yay.  Pity he won't be around to brawl in it, except possibly with a very different moveset.
Marth - Actually, his odds are fairly decent.  Ike has been touted as heavyweight brawler, noticably different from Marth.  So will Marth return?  It's not guranteed, but it's possible.

I agree, I think Marth has a chance of returning, as does Ness.  I think it's just hyping up the fact that the clones are almost definintely gone or else completely retooled.

On that note though, I don't see why people condemn Young Link as the worst clone (along side Dr. Mario) when he's probably the most different from his parent character.

Oops, I knew I forgot Ness:

Given that Ness used moves in the previous smash titles that really weren't his and that almost all of his special moves were borrowed from his teammates, it seems like Ness will appear, but only with a new moveset we haven't tried on him.

Pichu- going...going...GONE!
Falco- replaced by another Starfox character like Krystal or Wolf
Dr. Mario- the Dr. Mario costume would be cool but i highly doubt it
Young Link- replaced by Windwaker Link or Masks Link
Marth + Roy- i dont know or care, but i do know that Ike is awesome

I've saved the best for last GANONDORF!!!- Ganondorf will return as a PC with a great new appearence and moveset.

We can all hope that's the case.

After studying some of the history behind Earthbound, it seems as if Ness was not much of a "Psychic" at all.
He relied mainly on physical attacks like the Cracked Bat and his famous Yo-Yo.
Paula seemed to be the true psy-powerhouse.
