It's not that importnat, but I think it comes back down to we don't know when or even if Sonic will be in the SE.
but i think its a concrete possibilty that he will be in SE... i mean, unless his introduction trailer (mario attacking enemies and sonic speeding by)was just made for the updates

I was under the impression that the Subspace bomb would serve as a sort of dimensional portal allowing Snake, Sonic and possibly other 3rd party icons to meet and greet their Nintendo counterparts. This admittedly overused plot device would serve as a possible explanation for their existence. Unless all video game worlds are actually connected and devoid of such mundane concepts like Copyright Laws.

I hope that will be the case.

EDIT: Included the picture for added effect.

Given that the Smash characters are admittedly out of canon, I don't think they'll need to tear open the fabric of space time to get Sonic and Snake in.

The general idea of the game and all of its characters is the whole fighting thing. The same plot as SSB, excepted updated to trophies from puppets in Melee. The "In This World..." post mentioned and explained that. So, the characters we see aren't actually the Mario that saved Princess Peach from Bowser a bazillion times(just ballpark sum), but a figurine brought to life to fight. Its sort of lame, and kinda gay, but it opens up the world like nothing else could. The difference between Mario and Sonic is no different than Mario and Link. They don't have to relate to each other plotwise and company wise in that regard. On a related matter, I believe almost all of the playable characters will be a part of the SSE. Remember, its over 10 hours long, why wouldn't they use all of the characters, or at least most of them? Sonic and Snake are such iconic and great characters, why wouldn't they take the opportunity to involve them in a deep, complex, and brilliant storyline such as that in the SSE. I haven't played it, but going off what we've seen, and the Famitsu review, we can expect great things from every aspect of Brawl.

But, again, Ive ranted, and of course gotten off topic. My apologies!
