Something I stumbled on that my brother and I (mostly him) came up with shortly after Dedede was introduced. Fox hound titles for everybody.
To elaborate, in Metal Gear Solid (One) all of the FoxHound agents had names that were an attribute followed by an animal (Solid Snake, Revolver Ocelot, etc) So we went through and decided what the names of each character would be.
Mario -
Crash Plumber (originally Crash Plumber was Luigi, due to his headbutt, but since he's not announced yet and we liked the name we moved it to Mario)
Link -
Sword Wolf (this one is rather obvious. Sword because Link uses a sword, and he gained his wolf form in the Zelda comics and then in Twilight Princess. And it's a lot cooler than "Sword Pink Bunny")
Kirby -
Mimic Marshmallow (nuff said)
Pikachu -
Lightning Mouse (again obvious)
Fox -
Gray Fox (A shout out to the real Gray Fox.)
Samus Aran -
Hunter Armadillo (Hunter because she's a Bounty Hunter, and Armadillo because she is heavily armored and rolls into a ball)
Zelda -
Twilight Hawk (Twilight due to her role in Twilight Princess. Hawk's are often a symbol of strength, determination, and cunning, so it fits her as power, courage and wisdom)
Bowser -
Crush Turtle (Crush is meant to mirror Crash from Mario, also he's a giant friggin turtle who smashes you with his butt)
Donkey Kong -
Barrel Ape (Yeah... if I have to explain this one, leave and never return
)
Yoshi -
Tongue Dinosaur (need I go on?)
Peach -
Sports Mushroom (Mushroom is obvious. Sports due to her moves borrowing from her sports games)
Ice Climbers -
Mountain Vulture & Mountain Condor (Two carrion birds, inspired by the condor at the end of the stage)
Pit -
Archer Angelfish (An expert bowman, with angel wings)
Wario -
Gasseous Snake (Gas because... well... it's Wario. Snake because he can eat things whole, but mostly as a throw out as this is the only substance+snake that wasn't in the games)
Zero Suit Samus -
Hunter Anteater (Hunter again, anteater for her dextrous whip that she grabs people with)
Ike -
Mercenary Swordfish (Not wanting to do Sword X again, we went with Mercenary, and chose Swordfish because he does in fact fight with a sword)
Pokemon Trainer -
Trainer Rattata (Trainer is obvious. We decided to use a pokemon instead of a normal animal again for obvious reasons. We chose Rattata because it's a rather mundane creature and Rat would be a believable Foxhound name)
Sonic -
Dash Hedgehog (...)
Dedede -
Dream Penguin (This bit of lore is lost in most more recent games, but Popstar is Dreamland, where all dreams are made)
Diddy Kong -
Peanut Monkey (a monkey with a peanut gun)
Metaknight -
Sword Owl (Given his obsession with swords, we had to give him sword. Owl is deemed due to his flight, mystery, honor and wisdom
Snake -
Iriquois Pliskin (this is in fact the fake name he gives to Raiden in Metal Gear Solid 2)
Lucas-
Psycho Mantis II (because he could soooo kick Psycho's ass)
Olimar -
King Carrot (because he commands the carrot like pikmin)
