I came up with a lot of ideas about Smashpower. Tell me your opinion on them

1)   A new look

IGN did. Facebook did it. After awhile of coming on time after time, seeing the same old designs and wallpapers, it gets boring. I think we should get someone to make a new, cooler wallpaper background, and change some colors here and there. It gives the sense of a “new” site without the site going through some major changes. Red and black gets boring after so much. Maybe we could change it for seasons or time. Like for this Christmas holiday season, the colors could be green and red, or red and white. The background could use some new improvements also. Maybe the background in the tourney ladders could work. Or the Brawl Character Cast. I think Smashpower needs a new, fresh look.

2)   Clean out the forums

The day was November 21st. I had joined just joined SmashPower. It was my first forum/blogg site I’ve ever been on. I didn’t really know what to do. I bet the same was for most people. Because of the lack of experience, there was pointless spam created everywhere. I think a few threads and posts need to be deleted. Like all of the posts with people arguing, policing and complaining over spelling or some other pointless topic. And also threads that have no posts in them. Even threads that are locked because it took 5 minutes for someone to tell the creator that there was another thread about the same thing and that they should lock it. There is a lot of waste of space posts. It will make people’s post count drop, but I think the threads need some tuning.

3)   More glory

Although Smashpower is a small site, it is home to many very good brawlers. A perfect example; Illz. Most likely the best here. He has been the leader of the leaderboards ever since they first were made. He should get a reward of some kind of virtual trophy for that. And even the 2nd and 3rd place runner ups should get something to brag about. There should be a larger type of rewards system of trophies, medals, and titles. And even odd awards like “Last place Brawler of the Month” or “Youngest Brawler to win a tourney”. They should be given out once a month, or once a year, or each time the leaderboards are updated.  This idea has been addressed many times before. So I ask Rocky, why have you not responded to it? A simple “No, it’s a stupid idea, I’m not doing it” will make me happy. Its bad having an idea and not having the person who makes ideas come true not respond to you and your idea.

4) More freedom

Freedom. Everyone loves it. It’s the reason why most games are so great. Take LittleBigPlanet for example. It’s a giant sandbox of unlimited ideas that you come up with and make yourself. Level creators, character creations, free play mode. If you want it, you create it. I think SmashPower should provide more power and freedom to the members. Edit- I think SmashPower should provide more freedom to the members everyone agrees we can trust one. I don’t want Goku having the abilities of freedom trusted members have. When I say freedom, I mean more options. Even little things would be great.

Examples:

Change you font color on the members online list, like how Rocky and Amanda are blue.

Change tourney times if everyone agrees on it, even after you set the time

Add your own events to the calendar. The events need to be somewhat important. For example, the release date of a game. April 23rd = "BioShock 2 release date" Not “October 16th = Day my front door gets painted” or MArch 4th = Day I buy more crayons"

The signature size should be larger. I can’t tell you how much times I find an awesome sig., only the find it exceeds the limit of 1 inch because its 1.3 inches. I’m not saying make the maximum size super big, but just enough for more sigs. to fit. Maybe like 1.5 inches.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
***********THIS ONE WOULD BE VERY HELPFULL************

A spell check programmed into the post. Remember way way back, when people were shooting each other over spelling? Now that I look back on it, I find those were the most stupidest, pointless fights of my life. How much my memories would be better if there was a spell check in the post. It should work like Microsoft word, just a little less advanced. All it should do is underline a word red when you spell it wrong. We don’t need green lines for grammar errors, or synonyms for words. Just a simple line that tells you where you made a mistake in your spelling before you post or send something.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

I am not the smartest person in the world (most of you know this already). Once in awhile, I mess up (most of you know this already too). One time I accidentally deleted the wrong post. I had to retype the whole thing. Not fun. There should be a private recycle bin, where a member could go to find threads, messages, and posts he/she deleted. Maybe you delete something you think you don’t need, only to find your friend wants it a few days later. How convenient it would be to open your recycle bin and grab that post you thought you didn’t need. You and your friend would be very happy people.

This one is on the edge. It is very debatable wheatear it is fair or not. Say you are in the chat. Rocky is on vacation. Amanda is busy doing something else. You find a new member come in. You kindly greet him and you be the nicest person you can possible be. He seems like a nice guy. Until he starts to scream penis and flood the chat. It is too little for MODULE to notice, but all of you want him gone. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could get rid of him? I think members should have the ability to kick people from the chat themselves. Not just any member though; only members we can all agree we trust. If you find someone in the chat that is being annoying, you alone couldn’t kick him out. Atleast 2/3 of the members in chat would have to agree and click the “kick” button on the annoying member’s name. Of course, this idea is not one of my best, because of a few flaws. A group of people could misuse this power and kick someone out as a joke. That is why this power should only be given to those won’t misuse this power and that we can trust them with it.

These are just some my ideas on what could make SmashPower a better, cooler place. Rocky, it would be kindly and very appreciated if you gave me feed back, created some these ideas, or told me why none of this could happen. Even a “because I don’t fell like it” is good with me. Just something to let me know you thought about it and considered it.

Wow, the patience you took to create and compose this "essay" is just superb Sarah Smiley

I agree with everything on the list.  I guess the "kick" thing is a little far-fetched, as only VERY few trustful members can hold this job.  A prime example is Bobby, but I don't think he'd want the pressure.  However, it does serve as a compliment, then again, how many of us trust Bobby.  I know I do.

I'm liking the first idea.  Smashpower needs to change its layout every once in a while.  It'll make it more appealing.

Great ideas, Sarah. Certainly well thought out-- I can see how all of these could greatly add to the SP experience. I'm for them all.

In order:

1. A new look: Typically, I'm not very fond of appearance updates. Its almost like navigating a new website for me. However, I do think a season/holiday change would be a fun little touch. I've visited a couple of sites that have done this in the past (i.e. create a holiday themed banner or site logo, etc), and its pretty fun. It provides a nice and appropriate little change, while not doing anything too drastic for those who have difficulty adjusting to change.
As long as nothing too drastic is done, a few updated colors here and there is a good idea as well. Perhaps in connection with the season/holiday idea?

2. Clean out the forums: Old threads, big or small, often harbor conversations that were a large part of SP history. I enjoy going back through them from time to time to just read, keep myself familiar with SP history and the people of which have traversed its cybernetic ground, and bring back fond memories (well, mostly fond Tongue).
With that said, I agree deleting old, utterly pointless, and unfruitful threads is a good idea. Dead, duplicate topics just take up precious space.

3. More glory: I like the idea of different trophies. Giving more significance to our members' Brawl accomplishments would be desirably appropriate. Having fun or wacky trophies would a cool touch as well-- I know I would certainly enjoy seeing/hearing of/obtaining one that made me smile, or one that provided me with an interesting little tidbit of brawler news.

4. More freedom: I'm not totally sure what all this "freedom" encompasses. Personalized SP appearance/interaction? I can see how some things would be nice, although it doesn't rank high on my list. Having my own Online Color would be a fun little addition. Smiley
I don't think SP could go wrong with granting someone with a few Moderator specific powers, though, such as thread deletion and whatnot (as in the case of the spambot last month).

(5.) Installed spell check: A brilliant idea. This would solve so many "issues", and smarten up SP's image-- not that there's a lot of room to do so.
Personally, I'm a Firefox user, so spellcheck isn't a problem for me. Perhaps SP could be made to only work in Firefox. Tongue

(6.) Post recycle bin: Yet another brilliant idea. I've lost several thoroughly thought out posts/threads because of accidental deletion (I have a habit of using my arrow keys to select multiple options in pop up boxes, and pressing them one too many times...).

(7.) Member chatroom kicking: Probably one of my favorite ideas here. I can't count how many times a lack of authoritative SP figures has been a problematic issue in the past.

Thank you for the compliment. Its not a power I'd abuse or take frivolously, to be sure.
I'll refrain from calling out names before this idea gets put into action. However, I do agree with this idea. A trustworthy and responsible person would do well to be gifted with such a position. SP would undoubtedly benefit from such an action-- and give people a better sense of security, if that's the right word.

I actually agree with you Sarah with everything.

I only have one concern about the spelling thing, despite having spell check, some people really don't care how they spell even if the mistake is right in front of their face. If it were an automatic spell check, that would be much better. Including a prompt for other words once you spell things wrong.

I wonder if this will be implemented though. Given Rocky's schedule, it would be best that Rocky get other people to pitch in and help as forum programmers. But again, this is all in Rocky's good judgment.

great ideas , but considering that

a) you guys never bring new members
b) you guys are selfishly blocking the ad banners that generate revenue
c) you guys aren't around much , and nobody wants to fight
d) thus , the site is causing me to hopelessly lose money

i don't really feel that motivated to put much more effort into development . i worked my ass off to make this place what it is , and with all you here now , i feel that it was worth it , but with the returns no longer existent , i'm disinclined to dump more of my time and effort into what is seemingly a bottomless pit .

He does have a point on this.  It's similar to begging your mum or dad to give you that new red truck you wanted, then the next day you get bored of it and well, it's a cycle.....

Only 30% of the good population of SP members around every now and then, but correct me if there's less of us now >.>

Well stated. I'm glad to hear you consider your time spent in the past on SP to be worthwhile in the present.
I'll see what I can do about clicking the ads more often. With that note, I've been trying to make my stay here worthwhile to SP, but I guess circumstances are not always in my favor (such periodic internet-less and Wii-less periods of time). Advertising is something I hope to--and have started to--improve on.
Hopefully our numbers will become larger soon, and start to better fulfill your expectations and requirements.

But with regards to your sentiments, a lack of development is certainly understandable. It would just be appreciated.
And who knows. Maybe improvements would better attract new members.

The key phrase being "of the good population of SP members". We may have 300 or so, but a lot of those are zombies and 10 day attenders. Juan's calculation seems accurate enough.

Perhaps we're not a large family, but we're a family nonetheless. This place really is a home-from-home to me, and I know its the same for most of us. That certainly means a lot to me, and says a lot about this site.
