it is the computer's responsibility to carry out the commands of the user . it is not the computer's responsibility to ensure that it is only used by responsible people . if you allow your nephew who deletes game data to use your computer , you have allowed your nephew to delete your game data . those of us who don't have wreckless nephews should not be punished by the additional hassle of having to enter a password .
if you're looking for security , perhaps you should give that nephew of yours a sound beating and threats of disfigurement if he ever touches your stuff again .

hahaha...the story to that is...I go to the US, leave my N64 unassembled. Pesky sister goes to my room and assembles it for her kids. Kids are left with unknowledgeable maids. Nephews destroy file. That's why, pesky sister + annoying nephews = needs security for those kinds of options...and besides
what if a "friend" of yours went to your house...to visit...and he played Brawl...then he deleted your file...then left...well...friend becomes enemy but the damage is done...how about that?
that's why pcs have passwords...so no one can delete your game when you're gone...there should be passwords for those stuff...well...wait...there is a childlock...I'll use that instead...but how about pesky frenemies?

That's why, pesky sister + annoying nephews = needs security for those kinds of options...and besides lock your room or keep your valuables locked in a safe . what if a "friend" of yours went to your house...to visit...and he played Brawl...then he deleted your file...then left...well...friend becomes enemy but the damage is done...how about that? i wouldn't make friends with a person that would disrespect and damage my property .

While that does suck as somebody who's had to deal with the other end of computer systems you have to realize that there's a careful balance of convenience and security. Not enough security and people get worried, too much security and it becomes too much of a nuisance. That's why they generally keep the number of passwords needed for a system to a minimum. And in most cases, a password is an unneccesary step on a save cartridge, especially since they could go through the actual data management.
Yes, the ability to set up a password on such systems would be nice, but the developers probably didn't think it was necesssary.
As for an alternative solution, the only think I can recommend is getting a backup save cartridge.

I've never had the problem of nephews. The worst that's ever happened is I accidently saved over my completed Melee file. Maybe there should be protection against complete idiots?

Yeah...sometimes the only protection you can give is not allow people to play without your permission...but still...there should be a bit more security to that option mode like before accessing the erase data mode, you need an authorized password to do so. I hope he does put that option...Sakurai as has been said...is supposed to think of everyone.
