i've been working on the coding for tournament rosters lately , and it's gotten to the point where i need to start taking requests for tournament types . so far , i've only done work on 2 types :
single elimination . double elimination .
both of these are good for an unlimited number of entrants (fighters) , but they are both tournaments consisting of 1v1 matches . if you want me to start implementing things like doubles tournaments , team tournaments , etc , then i need to have some idea of you want those to work .

why dont we have a 4 player free for all tourney? like instead of 1 on 1 we have 4 fighters in each match? only the winner would move on and the others are elminated.
or how about a special rules tourney? for example, we can only choose a character from a specific franchise( like only zelda, link or ganondorf can be selected or only mario characters)
well what do you guys think?

well what do you guys think? special rules are fine , because they don't effect the structure of the tournament . you can just list the rules at the top of the tournament thread . the only issue is proving whether or not someone was following the rules . this is something that i would rather not take responsibility for . if it works ok with no one cheating , then that's fine . ok , so i have one suggestion for 4 player single elimination tournaments . what else ?

I'd go with the 1 on 1 or 2 on 2 more...rather than 4 free-for-all...sorry

A completely random tournament! No, hear me out. Each player has to pick a random character, and a random stage is selected. If possible, items are randomised too. Again, it would probably have to work on a trust basis though

random character thing could work but the problem with those is the best player tends to get one of the best characters. I don't really like the idea of getting a random character. It would suck to get somone like bowser or yoshi. I would much rather have it chose your own character.

How's about a lesser character tournament? You know, after a pattern develops where there's 5 or so characters that are almost never used, you hold a tournament allowing only those characters.

right , like i said . these are pretty much just arbitrary rules that are agreed on beforehand . what i'm looking for is some ideas that will require being coded into the website .

There could always be the winner/loser out things. I've never used them, but someone here might have done

well, it's not exactly a tournament, but there's always encorporating a ladder, where you can challenge up.
Basically everybody gets a spot (randomly determined at first, or a tournament could determine most of the order) from 1 to however many players we have.
Each person can challenge the next person or two up the ladder (or 3 or 4 depending on how big it gets). At whichpoint the two must work out a time to challenge eachother. If the challenger (the lower guy) loses, nothing changes. If the challenger wins, he takes the champion's spot, and the cahmpion (and anybody between them) slides down the ladder.
New entries would of course be given the lowest rung.
