Join a quick and simple brawl against someone, somewhere! If you’re not going to be playing with a friend, this is the mode you’ll tend to use.

This time, we’ll take a look at how it flows.

The Wii is trying to connect in earnest! And it succeeds!

Here you choose With Anyone.

You could also choose Team Battle,
but we’ll choose Basic Brawl here.

You go straight to the character-selection screen.

Huh? We’re already at character selection? That’s right. You don’t make any rooms.

At this point, you’re already requesting a match. If you connect to someone, you’ll see their status at the bottom of the screen.

Character selection is limited to 45 seconds. If time runs out, your character will be chosen for you at random, so make your choices quickly so as not to make others wait.

Then you go to stage selection.

You can cast one vote for the stage you want to play. A stage is chosen by lottery from among those voted on by the players.

Also, the items that are turned off in the item switch are also determined by lottery.

Practice on Sandbag while you wait...

Then just wait until you get everyone together.

Then the match begins!!

Isn’t that simple? You don’t have to trouble with any settings. You just choose characters and stages.

Names won’t be shown and messages won’t be sent. Neither your identity nor your opponents’ will be known, so you can play without any worries.

By the way, have you ever had an experience in which your opponent was disconnected, and the match never came to fruition? Like when you started with four players, but ended up with only one?

I don’t like that feeling, so I’ve tried to counter it.

If you get cut off, your character will get taken over by the CPU without your opponents even knowing—it pinch hits for you!

Hold on! You can’t tell it’s a CPU!

That’s epic! Can we really do this? Wouldn’t you say it’s way better than having all your opponents drop out?

However, we won’t be swapping in CPU characters when you’re playing With Friends. Sorry about that.

And there is one more important thing...

When you have a battle mode that runs online like Basic Brawl, the problem of what to do with hidden characters arises. If one of your opponents chooses a character you haven’t unlocked yet, it will be spoiled for you immediately.

But even without this mode, given the proliferation of the Internet these days, the existence of hidden characters is going to get exposed anyway.

So, this time I’m moving in the direction of not being too hung up on hidden characters.

You can earn most characters by playing through Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary. For those of you who look forward to those encounters, I recommend you clear this mode before playing Basic Brawl.

And as the case has always been, I’ve made it so you can play the characters you unlock in battles.

i wonder why the stage selection screen says 1 coin? maybe the more coins u spend then the liklihood of your stage being chosen increases?

i think it's more likely that the guy needs to spend a coin to unlock the level .

i'm more curious about why zelda and snake aren't shown on the roster .

I was looking at that myself.  I think that's the character selection screen from the E for All demo.  Snake is clearly visible in one of the battles so I think it's the limited demo selection screen to prevent the full roster from being released.

Also...this was a pretty good update!  I was a little POed when I saw him announce how battle anyone worked, because we've seen it before on Nintendo Wi-fi, but the CPU switch thing is a great idea.  Also, that thing about how to unlock secret characters kind of supports a theory that myself and some of the other users of this forum discussed in chat last night where characters might be bosses...  Anyway, I feel like Sakurai is preparing to show us some secrets with how he was talking at the end of this post.

I love the UPDATE!!! Not because of the facts mentioned, the replacing of cpus and etc...but because, HIDDEN CHARACTERS COULD BE UNLOCKED VIA SE!!! That means the characters would easily be unlocked and that everything released on DOJO so far ARE starters. I LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT!!!

And oh yeah, regarding the screenshots of the character selection and stage selection, they are both taken from the demo. I'm 100% positive! They didn't want to reveal it and duh, the demo wouldn't have online play. They just rendered the screens to fit the mode so no one would know the roster YET!

Well...even I assumed it to be true. But honestly, I was ecstatic to learn that it would be really unlocked mostly on SE. I bet though you can unlock Jigglypuff via Classic Brawl.

OK...I guess the characters wouldn't be so easily unlocked, but I feel that all characters given on DOJO are starters as Sakurai to a certain level does not want to reveal hidden characters.

I personally like this theory.  The guy puts 1 coin on his favorite stage, thus starting a bidding war if someone else doesn't like it... sounds fun.
i think it's more likely that the guy needs to spend a coin to unlock the level .
I don't think so...

No, no. You earn and save these [coins] up little by little as you play. And supposedly you can use them somewhere. But no—you don’t use them to shop.
http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/gamemode/various/various11.html
(Emphasis mine.)
So, they're instead used to bid on stages, if I'm not mistaken.  I don't know if it will be an absolute bid (most coins wins) or a probability weight (stages with more coins have higher odds of being chosen).  You might also be able to wager them.
EDIT:
Quote from: Sakurai
You can cast one vote for the stage you want to play. A stage is chosen by lottery from among those voted on by the players.
Never mind that then... maybe you just have to pay a coin to cast a vote.  Unless there's been some mistranslation (always possible).

I don't think they use it to bid. As it was said on the site, "You can cast one vote for the stage you want to play. A stage is chosen by lottery from among those voted on by the players." Therefore it really isn't bidding. HAHA. Well, I don't think it is.

he says you don't use them to shop . that doesn't explicitly mean that you don't use them to unlock stages , charactrs , or other features . maybe he just means that you can't buy big shields or red candles with them .

I don't think they use it to bid. As it was said on the site, "You can cast one vote for the stage you want to play. A stage is chosen by lottery from among those voted on by the players." Therefore it really isn't bidding.

yeah . that's pretty clear .

still , maybe your vote is represented by a coin , and the "1 coin" icon represents that one person has voted for that level ?

this will make online simple,i thought organizing tourneys would be hard but sakurais is making to easy for us to pummel each other.and for those who dont know that is the E for All selection screen because all the characters that were selectable and not selectable are what were in the E for ALL selection screen(trust me my friend was there and told me all about it).if they put sonic in there then  why the hell not put in zelda,or king DeeDee,or snake,or even wario.....thats because there moves were not announced or maybe FS smash were not announced prior to E for All.what really caught my attention is that he said that most characters will be unlocked in adventure mode and that we should spend our time playing that to unlock characters so the surprise is not spoiled when we play basic brawl....really now we know were most characters will pop up now.........sweet Smiley.

Yea i like how we can unlock most characters through SE but i honestley hope it's not too easy to get some of them. For example i hope we have to beat the SE and maybe even classic mode on hard or very hard settings to unlock some of the fighters. It would be nice to fight against certain opponents and be like "Heh he has **insert hidden character**, he/she's hard to get." Then again i just like a challenge with some things.
