Once you’ve unlocked all the fighters, you can play All-Star mode. It’s in the Solo section and you can play this mode with either one or two players.

The rules are basically the same as Boss Battles.

Beat all the characters!

After each fight, you go to the Rest Station and get refreshed.

You keep on repeating this pattern but you only have a limited number of hearts.

You’ll only have to fight one of Samus or Zero Suit Samus. Likewise, you’ll face either Zelda or Sheik. The Pokémon Trainer will send out Charizard, Squirtle and Ivysaur to battle you. You’ll get to meet 37 characters in total!

The stage will depend on the game series the character comes from. The order will match the order that the games and series were released (in Japan). Let’s take a look:.

Battle 1: Game & Watch

(Release: 04/1980)

Mr. Game & Watch is unleashed! And so begins our plodding journey through all the various series!

Battle 2: Mario Bros.

(Release: 07/1981)

Mario, Luigi, Bowser and Peach make their debut! There are four of them, so stay on your guard.

Battle 3: Donkey Kong

(Release: 07/1981)

You’ll meet Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong here.

Battle 4: Ice Climber

(Release: 01/1985)

The Ice Climbers stand alone. Of course, they DO come as a pair...

Battle 5: R.O.B.

(Release: 07/1985)

R.O.B. doesn’t have his own special stage, so he appears on the Mario Bros. stage.

Battle 6: The Legend of Zelda

(Release: 02/1986)

A battle with Link, Zelda (or Sheik), Ganondorf and Toon Link. There will be four of them, so be warned.

Battle 7: Metroid

(Release: 08/1986)

Samus or Zero Suit Samus will be here. You can tell which you’ll meet by the icons in the Rest Station.

Battle 8: Kid Icarus

(Release: 12/1986)

Pit appears alone. This was the last series to appear on the Famicom Disk System in Japan.

Battle 9: Metal Gear

(Release: 07/1987)

Duel against Snake on Shadow Moses Island. The first Metal Gear was actually created for the MSX2.

Battle 10: EarthBound

(Release: 07/1989)

Ness and Lucas appear. New Pork City is a big place, but be careful not to take too much damage just in case.

Battle 11: Fire Emblem

(Release: 04/1990)

Marth and Ike make their entrance. Who would have thought that characters from an old strategy game would have made it into a game like this?

Battle 12: Yoshi

(Release: 11/1990)

Yoshi first appeared in Super Mario World. He’s become quite a star since then.

Battle 13: F-Zero

(Release: 11/1990)

Captain Falcon fights alone. Even though he’s a racing driver, he’s still an extremely intense fighter.

Battle 14: Sonic The Hedgehog

(Release: 07/1991)

Sonic also appears on his own. Don’t you think he looks at home in Super Smash Bros.?

Battle 15: Kirby’s Dream Land

(Release: 04/1992)

Kirby, King Dedede and Meta Knight. All of them have strong mid-air capabilities.

Battle 16: Star Fox

(Release: 02/1993)

Fox, Falco and Wolf appear here. This is a real crisis point – you’re bound to have a lot of trouble here.

Battle 17: WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$!

(Release: 01/1994)
*The first game in which Wario was the main character

Wario doesn’t need friends. Even if you clear the minigames, you won’t be able to reduce your percentage.

Battle 18: Pokémon

(Release: 02/1996)

A battle against Pikachu, Squirtle, Ivysaur, Charizard, Lucario and Jigglypuff. Six enemies to defeat! This is a test of endurance as much as anything!

Battle 19: Pikmin

(Release: 10/2001)

Fight with Olimar and the Pikmin. This is the final battle, so fight with all the strength you can muster!!

It’s an exceptional number of characters from several incredibly famous series. And to think that they all had their beginnings in Japan...Wow!

When they’re all written down like this, we can see that there was almost a six-year gap before the release of Pikmin and over six years since.

There have been some big releases recently, such as "Animal Crossing", "Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training: How Old Is Your Brain" and "Wii Sports", but there hasn’t really been a new character-driven series. I guess it’s not easy coming up with something original nowadays.

I don't like that the fight/encounter order isn't scrambled up like it was in Melee.

And stages from Melee/Hanenbow/Pictochat/Animal Crossing should've turned up in this mode too!

AND why does Pokemon Trainer get to use all three Pokemon?

Quote from: Masahiro Sakurai
A battle against PIKACHU, SQUIRTLE, IVYSAUR, CHARIZARD, LUCARIO and JIGGLYPUFF. Six enemies to defeat! This is a test of endurance as much as anything!

First the Jigglypuff update and now this. I wonder what's with Sakurai's obsession of writing Pokémon names with all caps...

Anyway, I find this update interesting. I already knew that the All-Star Mode was back, but I had no idea that the characters always appeared in a given order.

Because he did that in the games Grin.

I like this update. i miss the randomness of melee all star mode. there was no preset order in melee if i recall correctly.

The only thing that was doomed to happen there was that you had to fight a horde of Mr.Game&Watch'es there.

It's almost like they are planning the order of the battles according to the time the game was made.
I don't know when all of these was made, so if I'm wrong, prove me wrong.

Actually, in the update it says from what game the characters' series originated from and when they were made, and your assumption is completely correct.

Since I haven't commented on this one, I might as well. It's really cool how they decided upon using the order of release as the order of matches. But one thing I can't fathom is...why couldn't some matches be on Melee Stages...

Jungle Japes is much more fun to play in. The Brawl DK stages are just pains in the neck!
Rainbow Cruise would be OK...but I'm not so mad about it.
I really wish Temple was one of the playable stages here!!! I haven't played much on that stage because of this...
I'd have Brinstar over Norfair any day...
I would have wished for Onett over New Pork. I just hate that stage!
Big Blue would be a good alternative to Port City Aero Dive.
Green Greens would be a good peaceful stage as an alternative to Halberd...
I really miss Corneria and it would be a better stage to play in then the small battlefield like Lylat Cruise...
And as for Pokémon Stadium, it would have been cool too.

And the other stages would have been nice to play on:
Smashville...I haven't played on that much too...wah
Pictochat would be an interesting alternative to Flatzone 2
and Hanenbow could be a ROB stage alternative...haha.

Is this because of self-interest? HAHA. But hey, I like some Melee stages over Brawl stages and it would have been better if these were included in all-star.
