The Wii does technically have a hard drive.  Any form of physical storage within a computer system is a hard drive.

wrong . "hard drive" is an abbreviation for "hard disk drive" , and the wii doesn't contain any disks other than the game discs that you play in it .

Quote
It's not as big as the ones in the other systems, but the fact that you can download games and save data without the need of a save cartridge means it has one.

all of that is saved in non-volatile memory . same principle as memory cards on the gamecube . ho hard drive .

flash memory , otherwise known as  electronically erasable read only memory (EEPROM) .
same principle used in SD cards , except you can't remove the card .

regardless of semantics, the original point still stands that the Wii has memory to store downloadable content.  The fact that it's not technically a hard drive doesn't change that.  The fact that they've actively said that there won't be any, makes the whole conversation moot.

the problem is that internal memory capacity is only about 32 MB . for a game like smash bros , that amount of memory is essentially useless .

even if you were to use the entire storage capacity of the largest compatible SD card (2GB) , that would get you nowhere compared to even the smallest available hard drives (about 80 GB) .

of course , it wouldn't be possible to rely on the SD storage space . in order for an online capable game to work correctly , changes made to one person's unit would have to also be available to everyone else's . that means you can only work with the small fraction of 32MB that is known to be available to all wii users .

the game is finished . you can't add things to it once it's already been produced and sold .

not just that , but when you make a game , you have to specifically design it with the ability to accept changes through internet , update discs , etc . you can't just take a game that's already been made and decide that you want to add stuff to it .

sakurai already said he didn't implement it for downloadable content . since it doesn't have that ability now , it means it can't , never will .
