I do think that the banner should be bigger than it is right now, maybe like twice the height. For a banner, 728 x 80 is a weird size, but 720 x 160 would be much easier to work with and it would look much better.

Aside from the border, which could be cropped out anyway, it's good actually and simple. It represents a majority of characters because that's the opening part in the intro video. Note how Mario's cap is the only thing of Mario that's visible...hahaha. I actually have an idea for the banner already but I really lack the time to do it.  |
