Ah, the Smash Taunt—a technique available only to Solid Snake and the Star Fox characters. Rumor has it that this technique helps you communicate with your allies.

To activate it, do a down taunt for just a split second—but only on a specific stage when you’re controlling a specific character.

It’s that simple—however, you need to get a knack for it. If you’re using the +Control Pad, you may want to try to just quickly scratch it...

<Snake’s Smash Taunt>

Choose Snake and play Shadow Moses Island.

Snake’s player did a split-second down taunt!

He’s engaged in communication. If he’s not interrupted..

Radio communication begins!

Roy Campbell, Mei Ling, and Otacon begin talking about the fighters. In the Metal Gear series, players were able to obtain information during boss fights using the radio. This is sort of like that.

Rumor has it that another guest person (or animal?) will join the three listed above. Who could that be?

And one little aside... If Snake gets sloppy while communicating...

Hey, that happens when your game ends in Metal Gear Solid!

<Star Fox (Group) Smash Taunt>

For this one, choose Fox or Falco and play Lylat Cruise.

Same deal—do a down taunt for a split second!

...But nothing happens...?

Hang on after the warp...

Radio communication begins!

After the spaceship warps to next location, a conversation that matches the background begins. There are five background variations, so there are five types of communication per character.

The characters who make appearances here are Fox, Falco, Peppy, Slippy, Krystal, Wolf, Leon, and Panther. What an amazing cast!

Because the dialogue is staged as if allies are observing the fight from the spaceship, the communication always excludes the one who’s engaged in the fight.

Please note—when the spaceship warps as someone is executing a Final Smash, or if the Dragoon appears, the communication fails.

And one more thing—in the Melee Corneria stage, you can enjoy the same set of communications that existed in the previous version of the game.

A dazzling secret element with top-class voice acting—I hope you enjoy it.

Not a very useful update on Smash terms, but an interesting one nonetheless. These taunts can be rather entertaining. I've heard the Japanese voice-acting for Lylat Cruise, and Crystal sounded cool. Slippy...not so much. I hope they've fixed that. If not, I'm still content with this extra bonus feature - its just there for fun, after all.

And one more thing—in the Melee Corneria stage, you can enjoy the same set of communications that existed in the previous version of the game.

I don't know what Sakurai was thinking putting that last statement right after the Melee reference. Sure, I know he had all the voice-acting in mind, especially in Brawl, but have you heard the voice-acting in Melee? Falco was great, but how about Peppy? He was agonizing to listen to! Whenever there's a cut scene for that stage, I always skip it.
Ah well, I guess he does have game to sell Cheesy.

Okay, I found the conversations in the "Conversations with Snake" thread. It seems appropriate. This was the first time I've listened to them. I'm actually pretty pleased with how they turned out. Peppy still sounds....like they could have found a better voice actor. Wolf sounds pretty cool though.

ohhhhh...I like that movie clip!  except the beginning...
"you know you are all like us.  Our fates are intertwined.  We are destined to meet in battle..."
GOSH!  those kinds of quotes I like, yet sound super annoying when said too often!
"Do you see my red rose?  it marks your imminent death!"  Now that line is just plain stupid (mainly because I can't see it, so therefore I live!)  but I like his quotes anyway because they're cool (in a weird Shakespearian way)...

I hate the one where all the Star Fox characters say that they would have been great playable characters, especially Krystal.  First Sakurai tells us that he put characters in as Assist Trophies that would have been great PCs, then he makes GANONDORF'S down taunt the sword which didn't make it in as his actual weapon.  Although now that I think about it...wouldn't Peppy have been a great choice?  Haha!  Tongue

Well this at the very least is proof that Sakurai listens to the fans.  Apparently he just doesn't do what they say  Wink.  Seriously though, making fun of one's self is pretty funny in his position.
