OVERVIEW :

Because nintendo has not provided us with a way to organize and record our battle standings , smashpower has implemented a tournamnt system in order to arrange and schedule tournaments , and also to maintain a worldwide ranking system . The tournement system will allow users to create tournaments of many sizes and varieties - anywhere from a 5 minute 1v1 battle to a 200 person battle spanning several weeks .

Since it is not possible for the website to communicate directly with your wii consoles , or the wifi battle network , we will be using the honor system when reporting results . after you've fought a match , please visit the page of your tournament and submit the results . it may be a good idea to save screenshots of videos of the match , just in case there is some dispute over who won .

CREATING A TOURNAMENT :

Any registered user can create a tournament . Other registered users are then welcome to join . When creating a new tournament , you will specify the details such as the type (single eleimination , team) and the maximum number of players . you will also specify a time and date for the tournament to begin , and an interval between rounds . for short tournaments , you should space the rounds with 10 minutes betwee - just enough time to battle and record yoru results . for longer tournaments , you might want to leave 1 day between matches . this way , you can always fight at a certain time of day , for those of you who have busy schedules to work with .

To create a tournament , you must first enter the tournament forum . Tournaments may only be created on this forum .

Once you have entered the forum , you will notice a button next to the "POST NEW TOPIC" button that says "POST NEW TOURNAMENT" .

Click this button and fill out the details on the following page .

RULES :

The tournament's creator has the choice of what rules will be followed . This can include to play a stock battle , a time battle , etc . You can choose to play giant melee or lightning melee . perhaps you will choose a specific handicap level for all players , or you will choose a specific stage or character for people to play as . the possibilities are endless . The rules of the tournament will be clearly visible at all times , and by joining a tournament , you agree to abide by the posted rules . Failure to abide by the rules can result in a rematch , forfeit , or ejection from the tournament .

TOURNAMENT TYPES :

Currently , there are 4 types of tournament available . 2, 3, and 4 man brawl are all single elimination tournaments with 2 , 3 and 4 players per match (repectively) . In any of this tournament type , you will only continue to the next round if you win first place in the current round .

Doubles is the last type of tournament currently avaiable . It is similar to single elimination tournamants , but you will partner up at the beginning , and each team of partners will continue to the next round only if you oor your partner win first place in the current round .

Other types of tournaments will become available in the near future . These four will be the most commonly used , and have been tested .

You can also specify a practice tournament if you just want to play for fun and you don't want results to be counted toward your rank .

JOINING A TOURNAMENT :

Registered members can join any open tournament . Simply open the thread that contains that tournament and click the button that says "Join" . If the tournament is a Doubles tournament , or any other team type tournament , the "Join" button will enter you into the tournament on a new team . There will also be buttons to join any of the existing teams , provided that the teams are not full . You can not participate in a team tournament without a full team , so make sure you tell your friends to join you , or you can join someone else .

If you change your mind about participating in a tournament , you can withdraw by clicking the "withdraw" button .

FINALIZING TOURNAMENT ENTRIES :

Once the tournament start time has passed , the tournament will no longer be open to new entrees . At this time , the tournament is said to be finalized . You can also finalize the tournament at any time by clicking the "Finalize" button . Be careful though . once the tournament has been finalized , it cannot be unfinalized , so make sure you've got all the participants you need before clicking this button .

LADDER DISPLAY :

In the center of the diplay , the tournament ladder will be presented . This will show the structure of the tournament . It will show the schedule of future matches , and who will be battling . Once challengers have joined the tournament , a graph-like structure will be built . To view the details of a specific player in any match , you can click on that player's icon in the ladder . That players details will be shown above .

STARTING THE MATCH :

In order to fight a match against your opponent , you will both have to register eachother's Wii system code and Brawl friend code . This information can be found in the detailed view that is displayed when you click your opponent's icon in the ladder display . Choose the option in your Smash Bros Braw game to play against friends , and follow the instructions provided with the game for starting a match . Depending on the rules of the tournament , it may be a specific person's responsibility to create the match , or this may be unspecified .

RECORDING MATCH OPTIONS :

If this character is you , then you will be able to enter detailed information about the match . You can enter your chosen fighter , handicap level , and stage . Depending on the rules of the tournament , the stage can be used to vote for which stage will be chosen , or it can be used to indicate which stage the previous round was fought at . All of this information can be entered before or after a match has been fought .

There are also checkboxes beneath the stage and cahracter select to indicate if you have selected (or will select) a character or stage at random .

There is one last detail that needs to be filled in for the match options . This is what place you recieved after fighting . This is the only detail that cannot be entered until after the match has been fought . Once a trophy is claimed , it cannot be put back , so make sure you take your time and take the trophy that matches your place .

Don't even think about taking a trophy that doesn't belong to you .

CONTINUING THE TOURNAMENT :

When you have filled in your match otions , the ladder display will automatically update to show who will proceed to the next round . Arrows will be drawn to help you follow the flow of the graph . Each tile of the ladder display will also show one of 4 different coins to show how people had placed .

It is important to fill in your match options as soon as you can after playing . If you have not filled in your options when the next round comes along , you may suffer a forfeit .

COMPLETING THE TOURNAMENT

When the final match has been fought , the ladder will have been completely filled . Points will be awarded only after the tournament has been completed . Depending on the type of tournament , points will be awarded differently . This is another reason to always fill in your match options as soon as possible . You will only recieve points for the match trophies you have claimed . If you forget to claim one , it will be counted as a loss .

EXAMPLES :

To better understand how everything works , you might want to take a look at a few example tournaments that i've created . Follow the links to view a variety of different types .

2 Man Brawl
4 Man Brawl
Doubles (with a partner)

If you live in japan , or on the east coast of the USA , you should also take a look at our first tournament , which will be starting at 1:00AM EST , just following the game's realease .

First Tournament - SIGN UP NOW !

It's been a lot of work , and I'm looking forward to finally having a smashing good time with all of you . Don't forget to tell all your friends about what we've got going here . I'll see you guys on March 9th .

Once Europe gets Brawl, will there be intercontinental tournaments? And if so, would it be possible for you to choose the times of the battles in a way that doesn't make anyone have to battle at inconvenient times like in the middle of the night or very early in the morning?

Oh, and how will it work with the recording of battles? Will you put someone who has the means of recording in every battle?

The person who choses the tournament can select what time they would like .

I guess when Europe and Asia gets involved, we'll need to fix the tourney times corresponding to timezones.

I wanted to know if someone is signed up for a tournament but cant make the time (if something unexpectedly came up) then would they wait for that person, or just drop them?

EDIT: Also wanted to know if you can join a tournament 10 seconds before it starts (like if you didnt think you would make it, but get home just in time to sign up for it)

it's the other players' choice . if any other player wants to continue , then the match will go on without you , resulting in your forfeit . if all other player agree to wait , then the can wait as long as they want until it's time for the next round to begin .

the creator of a tournament has the option to finalize it at any time , which prevents more people from joining . if the tournament hasn't started yet and hasn't been finalized , then anyone can still join .

Do you have to have everyones friend code who is competing in the tourney?Up to how many friend codes can you have stored on your Wii? Are tournaments set up like this or are they just matches. Can you even do them like the first option?

EDIT: I have another question. What if I want to partner up with my bro. or my sister in tournament? Can they be my partner or would they have to have an account on Smash Power? Sorry if these are obvious questions.
