I think the most recognizable places would be the Battleship Armada from Sonic Heroes, or else the Chao Garden.
Battleship Armada would have a sort of cross between Big Blue and Pokefloats. You gotta keep moving on quickly moving ships.
Chao Garden would be a rather open but uneven terrain. The trick is that the chao's are running around and doing... um... something. Possibly getting mad and attacking anybody who accidentally hit's them (they would be "Light" chaos and turn to "dark" chaos)

they wouldnt be recognizable to me lol.. i have no idea what those places are. but then again i only beat sonic 1-3 and sonic and knuckles.. |

A sonic stage would be pretty cool, im stilling waiting to figure out what that item from E for all that looked like sonics head does. Can't find a picture of it for some reason, well anyways its on some of the demo videos.
