This is a thread that goes to all of the noobs. Itll explain to them easily about how to play better and give them tips.

1.  Dont listen to Sakurai. He doesnt know how to play half of his games. He gives out the basics, but when it comes to bigger things, dont listen to him.

2. One of the more impotant stratiges in this game is ledge guarding. To do this, knock your rival off the stage first. Go as close to the end as you can, and get ready to use the C stick. If your rival is going to grab onto a ledge, use a down smash. If he/she is going above you, use an up smash. If hes going to come in straight, time up a side smash. To counter this, always try to grab onto a ledge most of the time you will safely make it back to saftey if you try to grab onto the stage.

3. Combos are very important. The easiest combo is to tap the A or B button numerous times. It works better if your rival doesnt flinch (fox's gun) or gets trapped in your moves (kirby's punches). What I recomen is grabbing, hitting them 2x, then tossing them into the air. Then try to do an up smash, or with some characters, like Marth, you can try to grab them again when they fall down. Dedede is seen in the demos using his grab, wich makes him slide with his rival, then using it over and over. That works better on long stages like Bridge of Eldin, Final D, and Smashville.

4. Its important to find a stage and a character your comfortable with. Those you like power choose Bowser, those who like speed chose Fox, and balanced players use Mario or Link. Most people dont enjoy moving stages, like Rumble falls or Rainbow road. Its best to find wich stage you like best, so if that stage is ever chossen, you are ready. No, its not true that if you go to the stage that matches your character you are you get a better chance of winning. Also, you should find wich items your good with (if any), or if you like Stocked or timed battles. I prefer stock, and if your favorite is Coin, not alot of people are gonna want to play with you Wink

5. In sports, they also say defence wins games. The same is true for Smash. Speed is both offencive and defensive, and heavy weights last longer than light weights. Your sheild is very important. NEVER let your sheild break on you. Taking a little smash is better than taking a fully charged one. Use the roll whenever you have the chance. Thats another very important tactic. If you have to, retire for a few seconds by jumping of the stage. Just make sure your able to make it back on. That stratige works alot better when theres more people playing.

6. Offence is important to. Whenever you have the chance, use a smash. Always go for more charged smashes, for they do more. Hitting from a distance with a gun or a long range weapon is also good. Hit and run is usefull. Both those tactics are cheap, so dont over use them. If you have the chance, try to do a metor smash. Thats when you do a big hit in the air and it sends your rivals down really fast. Most of the time, youll be able to recover after a metor smash.

7. Hopefullly, you know that a final smash is one of the most important things to use in the game. NEVER leave a smash ball to go beat someone up. Same goes with Pokeballs and AT holders. Get those and use those as soon as you can.

8. Suicide is almost never the option, unless you have 2 stock and your rival has 1. This doesnt work in timed matches, for as soon as you get the KO point, youll loose it. This tactic is the mother of cheapness, and if you use it alot, expect no one playing you. There is multiple ways to do this. The easist is with Donkey Kong. Grab someone, and move the controll stick. Then just walk off the ledge and watch you and your rivals stock go down by 1. With bowser, use your B side, and flip over the edge with your rival. Kirby has 2 ways to do this. The first one is by sucking your riival and jumping off, but thats easy to escape from. The Secon is is going as close to the edge as possible, grabing your rival, and do the sismic toss back drop. Youll both die. Once again, DONT USE THIS TO MUCH.

Any further tips will be added to the list.

would i be considered a noob even tho ive been playing smash since the n64 version but tell them about shine sprites if your fox
Using thether recovery and wall jumps is a decent way to save jumps when trying to recover.
Here's a good tip: Know the strongest moves of your character and how you can incorporate it in your combos. Second, know the limitations of all recovery moves so you can use it as your advantage whether you're the one recovering or not. Knowing the DI of these moves too help you Meteor Smash better.
Hmm...I think the more common term is edge-guarding and not ledge-guarding...haha.
most characters can jump from the ground, then midair jump once, then do an up B move to gain extra height.
some (kirby, jigglypuff,...) can midair jump multiple times(5 each for those two in melee).
In brawl a new gliding mechanic has been added for characters with wings(pit, charizard, meta knight,...) that seems to allow them to move horizontally without falling downwards much
An important attack that most new players don't use enough is the medium attack.  It is when you slightly tilt the control stick and hit A.  They are quick attacks but can have decent power.  They are great for pushing players back early in the match and creating juggle combos.  When your opponent has enough damage you can kill with them or set up a kill.
if you are a good team player, try to make a friend combo
here is one of my oldest ones
one player be kirby and the other be whoever else, have the kirby player suck up an opponent as your friend gets into position with a bomb-omb or a frezzie, the kirby player MUST SPIT THE OPPONENT A SPLIT SECOND BEFORE THE OTHER PLAYER THROWS THE ITEM and tada (warning don't do this too much or the opponet will not only call you a noob but also learn and utalize this skill)
CF tip: his b+up is reusable if you hit a person with it...what ever you do...TRY TO HIT A PERSON WITH IT...if they're in reach that is...then you can use it again to get to the edge if your off...
Oh...here's a Brawl tip: Try to get the most out of the floatiness of all characters. Aerial combos are hot now so learn as much as you can. Try to stay afloat.
also since they made it to where moves weaken when you use them in succession, its good for you to learn all of their moves, not just the powerful ones

How do the jumps work?

In all the videos I keep seeing characters multi-jumping in mid-air to get back on the stage. Do you get a limited amouut of jumps before you fall?

with characters with multiple jumps, USE IT TO YOUR ADVANTAGE!!!
ex: characters: Kirby, and...why not Samus Grin!  stage: Final Destination
1. Samus is at the left side of the stage away from the platform
2. Wait until Samus is close enough to jump just once to her
3. down+A is a VERY fun move in my mind
4. when it's done, just jump back up and use up+B
I love doing that move Grin!!!
