from what I've seen, you always have a choice between two characters (possibly more).

It's set up that way so if you have a second player, there's always somebody for them.

Ohh thats true, but its said that if 2nd player dies, so does 1st player. And vice versa. So theres no way Mario couldve been alone if he was a 2nd player. It had to be he was a 1st player.
